Plagiocephaly & Torticollis

Physiotherapy Services for Plagiocephaly & Torticollis in Babies

Plagiocephaly (also known as flat head syndrome), is characterised by an asymmetrical flattening of your baby’s head. Brachycephaly is a flat spot on the back of the skull. The diagnoses are common, occurring in up to 60% of babies.

As a baby’s head needs to soft and mailable in order to fit through the birth canal and to allow for your baby’s rapid brain growth in the first years of life. Because of this, if a baby remains in one position for too long, a flat spot on their skull can develop.

Plagiocephaly can occur independently or in conjunction torticollis.

Torticollis is the result of a tight neck muscle. In some cases, your baby may present with a lump in this muscle.  If your baby has torticollis, you may notice they have a preference to look to one side and demonstrate difficulty turning to the other side

Our physiotherapists will conduct a thorough assessment including a detailed birth and family history, daily routines, carer positioning and handling and a hands-on assessment looking at head shape, range of movement and motor skills. In the absence of any other condition, plagiocephaly and brachycephaly can resolve well with appropriate intervention and support.

Physiotherapy management strategies are evidence-based and consist of helping the parent/primary caregiver:

  • Understand the possible factors contributing head shape development
  • Become skilled at handling, feeding, play and carrying positions to help gain symmetrical movement
  • Gentle stretching  of tight structures
  • Play-based activities
  • Referral to other health professions as required

Your child’s physiotherapy management plan will be tailor made, taking into consideration your family and schedule. At AIM Therapy, we take great pride in delivering Physiotherapy services as unique as your child from assessment to intervention to meeting goals.
